Dear FWACC Volunteers,

Thank you for being a vital part of our volunteer team! This week we have several volunteer opportunities across both shelters, upcoming events, and special ways to help our dogs enjoy socialization and community outings. Check out the details below and see how you can make a difference this week!

Educational Corner: "Walk With Purpose"

Last week we talked about proper slip lead use—this week, let’s build on that with why structured walks matter. A structured walk isn’t just about getting dogs out of the kennel—it’s about creating calm, confident, and positive experiences that help them become more adoptable. When we walk with purpose (loose leash, clear direction, minimal pulling, and intentional pauses), we’re helping dogs regulate their energy, reduce stress, and build trust with handlers. Structured walks also allow potential adopters to see a dog’s best behavior instead of chaos at the end of a leash. Every walk is an opportunity to teach, decompress, and advocate for that dog—so thank you for making each step count!

Volunteer Weekly Need Highlight

Each week we highlight volunteer opportunities where a little extra help can make a big impact for our shelter pets. These roles directly support adoption efforts and help animals get noticed by potential adopters. If you’ve been looking for a way to jump in and help, this is a great place to start!

PetSmart National Adoption Week Volunteers Needed for PetSmart Hulen and PetSmart Alliance

PetSmart National Adoption Week Volunteer

During PetSmart National Adoption Week, volunteers help showcase some of our amazing shelter dogs to the public and support potential adopters throughout the event.

Volunteers may help with:
• Walking and handling dogs during the event
• Helping dogs feel comfortable and relaxed in a busy retail environment
• Talking with visitors about the dogs’ personalities and needs
• Encouraging adoptions by sharing each dog’s story
• Helping keep the dogs looking their best with cute bandanas, collars, and treats
• Assisting staff with basic event support, cleaning kennels, filling water bowls, etc, and keeping things running smoothly

This is a fun and rewarding opportunity to help our shelter dogs get seen, make connections with potential adopters, and hopefully go home with their new families!

Weekly Volunteer Needs: PetSmart Adoption Centers

We’re continuing the momentum from National Adoption Weekend and focusing on making a daily impact at our PetSmart Hulen and PetSmart Alliance Adoption Centers. These locations play a critical role in helping our pets get seen, connect with adopters, and ultimately find homes.

PetSmart Animal Spotlight Volunteer – Help Pets Get Noticed and Adopted
Every shelter pet has a story worth sharing. As an Animal Spotlight Volunteer, you’ll help highlight individual pets through photos, videos, and short write-ups that showcase their personality. Whether it’s capturing a playful moment or a quiet, affectionate side, your efforts help potential adopters see who they truly are.

These opportunities are perfect for volunteers who want consistent, hands-on involvement and the chance to directly impact a pet’s journey to adoption.

Paw Prints: The Lighter Side of the Shelter

If you’ve spent any time volunteering, you’ve probably noticed—no two dogs are the same.

There’s the one who treats every walk like a marathon, the one who melts into you the second you sit down, and the one who swears they’ve never been fed a day in their life (despite just finishing breakfast).

Behind every kennel door is a personality waiting to be discovered. And more often than not, it’s the few minutes you spend with them—the walk, the photo, the quiet moment—that helps bring that personality to life for someone else.

It may feel small, but it’s not.
Those moments are often what turn a “maybe” into a “let’s adopt.”

Transport Support Volunteers Needed

Help make our pets’ last few days in Texas extra special before they head to their new homes! We’re looking for volunteers to assist with dog walking and light cleaning during our upcoming transport preparation days.

Your support helps reduce stress for the animals, keeps them comfortable before their journey, and ensures everything runs smoothly as they prepare for travel.

Upcoming Transport Dates:
April 7th – April 9th

April 20th – April 22nd

Every walk, clean kennel, and moment of attention helps these pets start their next chapter feeling safe and cared for!

Doggy Day Out Spotlight - PetSmart NAW Edition!!!

We are seeking 12 volunteers on Saturday, March 28th and 12 volunteers on Sunday, March 29th for our Doggy Day Out program to assist with transporting dogs to our PetSmart Everyday Adoption Centers (EAC's) for National Adoption Weekend! We will be pre-selecting 6 dogs for each location, with dogs from Henry's Campus going to PetSmart Alliance (2901 Texas Sage Trail) and dogs from the Silcox Campus going to PetSmart Hulen (4800 SW Loop 820).

Our busiest hours are 12pm - 4pm, and we want to ensure that these animals are present, supported, and set up for success during this timeframe!

While these special dogs will be selected mid to late next week, we would like to begin securing volunteer commitments now to ensure that we have full coverage.

This is a great opportunity to give some of our longer-stay pets additional exposure. Some of them have been waiting since November and December for their chance to find a new home!

Thank you for continuing to show up for animals who need it most by opening your homes, your time, and your hearts. Foster care is one of the most powerful ways we save lives, and we are deeply grateful for the commitment you make every day.

Keep an eye out for next week’s updates!
