PetSmart Adoption Center Support Volunteer – Helping Pets Shine While They Wait
The PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center is designed to give shelter pets a comfortable space where they can meet potential adopters in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Center Support Volunteers help keep that space running smoothly by ensuring pets remain active, engaged, and ready to connect with visitors.
In this role, volunteers work alongside the PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center staff member to support daily activities throughout the center. Tasks may vary throughout the shift depending on the needs of the animals and the flow of visitors. Volunteers may help rotate pets into playrooms for enrichment and socialization, walk dogs while housing areas are cleaned, and assist with basic spot cleaning to keep the space tidy and comfortable.
Providing enrichment is also an important part of this role. Volunteers may help prepare or deliver enrichment activities that encourage pets to explore, play, and stay mentally stimulated while they wait for homes. These moments of engagement help reduce stress and allow animals to show their personalities in a more natural setting.
Center Support Volunteers also play an important role in helping visitors feel welcome. By interacting with potential adopters and assisting with meet-and-greets, volunteers help create positive connections between pets and the families considering them. These interactions can help visitors learn more about each animal and feel confident as they make adoption decisions.
This opportunity is ideal for volunteers who enjoy staying active, working with both animals and people, and rotating between a variety of tasks throughout the center. Volunteers work directly with the PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center staff member, who provides direction and guidance throughout the shift based on the needs of the animals and the adoption center.
By helping rotate animals, provide enrichment, and support adopter interactions, Center Support Volunteers create an engaging environment where pets can feel comfortable and confident. When animals are relaxed and active, they are more likely to show their personalities and connect with potential adopters — bringing them one step closer to finding their homes.
Before getting started, volunteers must complete Animal Health, Animal Handling, Animal Behavior, Dog Caretaker Training, and Cat Caretaker Training to ensure safe and effective interactions with the animals in the adoption center.
