PetSmart Shelter Care Volunteer – Helping Pets Start the Day Right
Each day at the PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center begins with preparation. Before adopters arrive and visitors begin meeting the animals, the space must be clean, organized, and ready for the day ahead. PetSmart Shelter Care Volunteers help create that foundation by working alongside the on-site staff member to provide hands-on care for the cats and dogs staying at the adoption center.
During the early morning shift from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM, volunteers assist staff with the daily care routine that keeps the center running smoothly. This may include cleaning and disinfecting cat rooms and dog kennels, refreshing food and water bowls, laundering bedding, and tidying shared areas so the center is welcoming and ready for visitors. Volunteers work directly with the PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center staff member, who helps guide tasks and ensures everything is completed safely and efficiently.
Depending on the needs of the day, volunteers may also assist by walking dogs while staff clean kennels and prepare housing areas. Giving dogs time outside their kennels not only helps staff complete their work more efficiently, but it also provides valuable exercise and stress relief for the animals. These short walks and interactions help dogs stay calmer, more comfortable, and better prepared to meet potential adopters.
This opportunity is ideal for volunteers who enjoy being active, working as part of a team, and providing hands-on care for animals. The morning routine moves quickly, and volunteers help ensure every pet starts the day with clean spaces, fresh food, and positive interaction. Volunteers check in with the PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center staff member at the start of each shift to review assignments and receive updates about the animals in the program.
The work completed during the morning shift sets the tone for the entire day. Clean, comfortable spaces help reduce stress for the animals and create a welcoming environment for visitors looking to adopt. When pets are well cared for and relaxed, they are more likely to show their personalities and connect with potential families.
Before getting started, volunteers must complete Animal Health, Animal Handling, Animal Behavior, and Dog Caretaker Training to ensure safe and effective care of the animals at the adoption center.
