All City of Fort Worth shelter volunteers are required to complete a background screening as part of the volunteer onboarding process. This helps us maintain a safe and trustworthy environment for our volunteers, staff, visitors, and animals.

Your privacy is important. Fort Worth Animal Care & Adoption Center staff do not receive or review your personal background information or screening details.

Our team only receives a simple approved or denied status once your screening has been processed.

You have a few options depending on where you are in your volunteer journey.

You do not have to wait for your background screening to be processed before signing up for Volunteer Orientation.

Once you have completed orientation, you may also begin volunteering in certain non-animal handling opportunities while your background screening is still being processed.

Animal handling opportunities may have additional onboarding, training, or approval requirements that must be completed before you can participate.

That’s okay too!

If you would like to attend Volunteer Orientation first to learn more about our shelter, available volunteer opportunities, and whether volunteering with FWACC is a great fit for you, you do not need to submit your background screening beforehand.

Simply email fwaccvolunteers@fortworthtexas.gov, and our Volunteer Team can help you get signed up for an upcoming orientation.

Once submitted, you can continue moving through the volunteer onboarding process while your screening is being processed.

After your background screening is submitted, the screening provider will process your information and provide the City with your eligibility status. Remember, FWACC staff will not receive the details of your screening — only whether you have been approved or denied to volunteer.
