April 14th-22nd
This week, we’re focusing on the power of a simple break—and how even a short time out of the shelter can change everything for a pet.
The shelter environment is designed to provide safety and care—but it is also high-stimulation. Constant noise, unfamiliar surroundings, and limited rest can elevate stress levels in dogs over time.
When a dog enters a home environment, even briefly, those stressors are reduced. The space is quieter, routines are more predictable, and the dog is able to rest more consistently. This shift allows their nervous system to begin to regulate, which is the first step toward behavioral improvement.
Research has shown that even short-term stays outside of the shelter can significantly reduce stress in dogs. Lower stress levels often lead to improved behavior, increased engagement, and a more accurate representation of the dog’s true personality.
This directly impacts outcomes.
When dogs are able to show who they are outside of the kennel, it helps staff and fosters make better placement decisions, increases adoption interest, and improves the likelihood of a successful match.
A short break doesn’t just help the dog in the moment—it helps shape their future.
Studies have found that time spent outside of the shelter environment lowers cortisol levels (a key stress hormone) in dogs. In some cases, even a 24–48 hour stay in a home can lead to noticeable behavioral changes, including improved sleep, reduced reactivity, and increased sociability.
This is why short-term fostering—like a SlumberPawty—is so impactful. It provides a reset that many dogs cannot achieve in the shelter alone.
Short-term fostering also plays a critical role in overall shelter capacity and flow.
Each dog placed into a foster home temporarily creates space within the shelter, allowing us to intake additional animals in need. At the same time, dogs returning from foster often come back with valuable behavioral insight that helps move them more quickly toward adoption or rescue placement.
This means one short-term foster placement can have a ripple effect—benefiting not just one dog, but multiple animals in the system.
Right now, there are dogs in the shelter who are not in crisis—but are at risk of becoming increasingly stressed the longer they remain in that environment.
Some are quiet. Some are overlooked. Many are simply waiting for the opportunity to step out of the shelter, decompress, and be evaluated in a different setting.
A short stay in a home can provide exactly that—and often becomes the turning point in how they are perceived and placed.
We have several short-term fostering opportunities available that are designed to be flexible while still making a measurable impact:
SlumberPawty Fostering – 24–72 hour stays that reduce stress and improve behavior
Transport Fostering – Temporary placement that helps pets successfully make their next step
Event Fostering – Preparing dogs to be more successful and visible at adoption events
Each of these opportunities directly supports both individual animal outcomes and overall shelter capacity.
Last week we sent out 42 pups to their forever homes! This makes a huge impact on our shelters as it helps us clear space for new pups coming in. Thank you to our volunteers who walk these pups rain or shine! And of course a BIG thank you to our fosters who are involved in this program.
Want to be a part of this life saving program? Check out our available pups on Trello under "Destination Transportation" and send us an email to take a pup home! It is that easy!

💙 Thank You for Being Part of This Work
Every time you open your home, take a dog out for the day, or share a pet’s story—you are changing outcomes.
Because of you, animals get a break from the shelter, a chance to decompress, and the opportunity to show who they truly are. That’s what leads to connections, adoptions, and second chances.
As we continue to grow our programs and create more opportunities for impact, know that none of this happens without you.
We’re so grateful to have you as part of this community. 🐾
