Volunteer Pet Photographer – Help a Shelter Pet Make a First Impression
For many shelter animals, a photo is their first introduction to the world. It’s what potential adopters see online, what rescue partners review when considering a transfer, and what encourages someone to come visit the shelter. A single image can spark curiosity, compassion, and connection. Volunteer Pet Photographers help create those moments.
In this role, volunteers capture photos that highlight the personality and spirit of shelter pets. By photographing dogs and cats outside of their kennels in approved areas, volunteers help showcase animals in a calmer, more natural environment where their true personality can shine. A relaxed expression, a playful moment, or a curious glance can tell a story that words often cannot.
Volunteers begin each shift by checking the communication board to identify their point of contact and the pets who need updated photos. After safely walking animals to approved outdoor locations, photographers capture portrait-oriented images that will be used on the shelter’s website and adoption platforms. Once photos are taken, volunteers submit them through the designated form so they can be added to the animal’s profile and used in adoption and rescue networking efforts.
Strong photos dramatically increase a pet’s visibility. On average, the Fort Worth Animal Care and Control website receives 2,000–2,500 visits each week, meaning thousands of potential adopters, fosters, and rescue partners are viewing animal profiles. A clear, engaging photo can be the difference between someone scrolling past or clicking to learn more about a pet. By capturing expressive, high-quality images, Volunteer Pet Photographers help animals stand out to the people most likely to change their lives.
This opportunity is ideal for volunteers who enjoy photography and want to use their skills to make a meaningful impact for animals. While professional equipment isn’t required, a basic understanding of lighting, framing, and composition helps ensure each animal is represented in the best possible way. Volunteers should be comfortable working independently while following shelter safety guidelines and photography protocols.
Before getting started, volunteers must complete Animal Health, Animal Handling, and Animal Behavior training to ensure safe and positive interactions with shelter animals while working in photography areas.

Each photo helps tell an animal’s story, increases their chances of adoption, and gives them a better opportunity to connect with the people searching for their next companion. Through your lens, you help give shelter pets the visibility and opportunity they deserve.
