FWACC Fosters,

As part of our weekly foster update, we’re sharing where support is most critical right now. Your willingness to open your home is one of the most powerful tools we have to move animals forward — and this week is no exception.

This Week’s Greatest Need: Medical Fosters for Dogs with URI

URI is one of the most common illnesses seen in shelter environments. While typically treatable and manageable, it spreads easily in a congregate setting. The best medicine? A quiet home.

When a dog with URI moves into foster care:

🐾 They recover faster in a low-stress environment

🐾 Their immune system gets a boost from rest and comfort

🐾 We reduce the risk of illness spreading to other dogs

🐾 Kennel space opens in our medical treatment wards

For many of these dogs, treatment may be as simple as oral medication, monitoring appetite and energy levels, and providing a calm place to decompress. Our medical team provides all supplies, medication, and guidance — you provide the healing environment.

Fostering a dog with URI is not only manageable, it is one of the most impactful ways you can directly support population health in the shelter.

If you’ve ever thought about trying medical fostering, this is a wonderful place to start. These dogs don’t need intensive medical care — they need comfort, consistency, and a temporary home.

Foster Highlights of the Week

This week, we’re spotlighting two dogs who would greatly benefit from foster support to help increase their visibility and placement opportunities:

  • Rigley – Henry’s Animal Campus 👉 View Trello card HERE

  • Honey – Chuck Silcox Animal Shelter 👉 View Trello card HERE

Both dogs are strong candidates for adoption events, the PetSmart Adoption Center, and our Transport Program. A foster stepping in — even short-term — could help gather updated notes, photos, and real-life observations that strengthen their placement profiles and move them forward more quickly.

If you’re available to foster for an upcoming event, support PetSmart placement, or assist in preparing a dog for transport, Rigley and Honey are excellent options this week.

Transport Support

Transport saves lives — but transport cannot happen without foster placement.

We currently have dogs scheduled for upcoming transports that must be placed into foster homes prior to departure. These placements are typically short-term and play a critical role in helping animals reach rescue partners out of state.

If you’re able to help with:

  • Pre-transport foster placement

  • Short-term foster (often 1–2 weeks)

  • Supporting dogs preparing for long-distance travel

Upcoming Adoption Events

We have several upcoming adoption events that are an important part of the foster journey. Helping your foster pet participate—whether by attending an event or sharing their story—gives them valuable exposure and increases their chances of finding a permanent home. Your insight and advocacy truly make the difference.

Thank you for opening your home, your time, and your heart to animals who need it most. Foster homes are one of the most powerful tools we have to save lives, and we are incredibly grateful for each of you.

More updates to come next week — including foster spotlights and urgent needs.
