Adoption Ambassador – Helping Pets Find the Right Home

Edited

For many dogs and cats in the shelter, finding the right home starts with a single connection. A conversation, a meet-and-greet, or a few moments spent learning about a pet’s personality can make all the difference. Adoption Ambassadors help create those connections by guiding potential adopters through the process of meeting and getting to know the animals waiting for homes.

In this role, volunteers spend time in the housing area of their choice, getting familiar with the dogs or cats there and learning about their personalities, quirks, and needs. Adoption Ambassadors help visitors navigate the adoption floor, answer questions, and share helpful insights about the animals they’ve spent time with. When someone is interested in meeting a pet, volunteers help facilitate introductions and guide meet-and-greets so both the animal and the adopter have a positive experience.

This opportunity is ideal for volunteers who enjoy interacting with both animals and people. Adoption Ambassadors help visitors feel comfortable asking questions and learning about the pets available for adoption. By spending time observing animals and understanding their behavior, volunteers can help potential adopters identify pets that may be a great fit for their home and lifestyle. These thoughtful conversations often help families feel more confident in their decision to adopt.

The impact of this role reaches far beyond a single adoption. When volunteers help facilitate introductions and support potential adopters, dogs and cats are able to leave the shelter feeling confident and ready for their new homes. At the same time, staff are able to focus on other essential work such as intake, behavior support, and medical care. As animals are adopted and kennels open up, the shelter is able to help even more pets in need.

Adoption Ambassadors play a meaningful role in making sure every introduction between a pet and a potential adopter is welcoming, informative, and successful. By helping animals show their true personalities and guiding visitors through the adoption process, volunteers help more pets find homes faster.

Before getting started, volunteers must complete Animal Health, Animal Handling, and Animal Behavior training to ensure they understand safe practices when working with shelter animals and assisting with meet-and-greets.

Volunteer duties, access, and privileges are valid only during the scheduled shift selected through the online volunteer scheduling system. A 15-minute grace period is allowed before and after each shift so volunteers can prepare for and wrap up their assignments.

Sometimes the right introduction is all it takes to change a pet’s future.
