Dish Assistant – Keep Our Shelter Pets Healthy & Happy
At a shelter, some of the most important work happens behind the scenes. Every meal served, every enrichment toy used, and every kennel cleaned depends on one simple thing: clean supplies. Food bowls, water dishes, and enrichment items must be thoroughly washed and sanitized to keep animals healthy and the shelter running smoothly.
As a Dish Assistant, you help create the foundation that supports the entire building. Clean bowls allow dogs and cats to eat safely. Sanitized water dishes help prevent the spread of illness. Freshly washed enrichment toys can be returned to animals quickly so they stay mentally engaged and comfortable in their kennels. While the work may seem simple, it supports every team in the shelter—from intake and medical to behavior and adoptions.
Volunteers in this role help wash and sanitize food and water bowls, clean enrichment items so they can be reused, and organize dish areas so supplies are ready when staff need them. When dishwashing stays caught up, the shelter runs more efficiently. Staff can focus on medical treatment, behavior support, and adoption conversations instead of falling behind on essential cleaning tasks. It keeps daily operations moving and ensures animals receive the care and comfort they deserve.
This opportunity is perfect for volunteers who enjoy structured tasks and the satisfaction of seeing immediate results from their work. In just a few hours, volunteers can help transform a stack of dirty dishes into clean, organized supplies ready to be used again. That efficiency makes a real difference in the daily rhythm of the shelter and directly supports the well-being of every animal in the building.
Behind-the-scenes work does not mean behind-the-impact. By keeping dish areas clean and organized, Dish Assistants support every pet, every staff member, and every lifesaving program operating in the shelter.
Before getting started, volunteers must complete Animal Health Training – Animal Health to ensure they understand proper sanitation protocols used throughout the shelter.

Volunteer duties, access, and privileges are valid only during the scheduled shift selected through the online volunteer scheduling system. A 15-minute grace period is allowed before and after each shift so volunteers can prepare for and wrap up their assignments.
Clean dishes may seem small, but they support every animal’s day from the very first meal to the last enrichment toy of the evening.
