Surgery Tech Assistant – Supporting Healing from Behind the Scenes
In a high-volume shelter surgery clinic, every detail matters. For pets undergoing procedures, safety, cleanliness, and efficiency all play an important role in ensuring a smooth surgery and recovery. Surgery Assistant volunteers help support the veterinary team by preparing supplies, maintaining sterile workspaces, and assisting with the flow of animals through the clinic.
Volunteers in this role work alongside veterinary staff to help keep the clinic organized and running efficiently. Surgery Assistants may help prepare surgery packs, sanitize instruments, maintain clean work areas, and assist with animal intake and discharge as pets move through the surgical process. Volunteers may also help monitor animals as they recover, ensuring they remain warm, comfortable, and safe after their procedures. As animals move through the clinic, volunteers may also assist with cleaning and resetting kennels as needed, helping ensure every patient has a clean and sanitary recovery space.
This opportunity is ideal for volunteers who are interested in veterinary care, animal health, or learning more about the medical side of shelter work. The role requires attention to detail, the ability to follow strict sanitation protocols, and a calm, focused presence in a fast-paced environment. Volunteers gain valuable exposure to the daily operations of a professional veterinary setting while supporting the care of animals undergoing surgery.
By helping the clinic stay organized and efficient, Surgery Assistants allow veterinary staff to focus fully on the procedures and medical care being provided. Each task—whether preparing surgical tools, sanitizing equipment, or helping a recovering animal stay comfortable—plays an important role in supporting successful surgeries and healthy recoveries.
Although much of this work happens behind the scenes, the impact is significant. Many of the animals passing through the clinic are receiving spay or neuter surgeries that prepare them for adoption or transfer to new homes. Volunteers help ensure these procedures happen safely and smoothly so more animals can move forward on their journey.
Before getting started, volunteers must complete Animal Health, Animal Handling, Animal Behavior, and Surgery Technician Training to ensure they understand the protocols and safety procedures used within the clinic.
